Heat and Humidity: Managing Sensitive Skin Through Summer

Summer arrives and, for many people with eczema or psoriasis, the change brings a complicated mix. More sunlight and warm air can feel welcome after a damp British winter, but heat and humidity introduce a different category of skin stress. Sweat accumulates in skin folds. Waistbands, bra straps, and sock lines trap moisture against compromised skin. The result is a flare pattern that looks different from winter dryness but is equally disruptive.

Understanding what is actually happening to your skin in warm weather, and learning to track it consistently, gives you a real chance of catching these flares early rather than waiting until they are already established.

How Warm Weather Affects the Skin Barrier

The skin barrier in eczema-prone skin is already less effective at retaining moisture and excluding irritants than in unaffected skin. Heat adds complexity to this picture in two directions at once.

First, sweating increases. Sweat itself is not harmful, but when it sits on compromised skin it contributes to maceration of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer. This softening of the skin surface can temporarily reduce barrier integrity further. Second, high ambient humidity can fool people into using less emollient, on the reasoning that the skin feels less dry. This is a common and understandable adjustment that often backfires. The skin barrier needs occlusion and lipid replenishment regardless of whether the air feels humid. Atmospheric moisture does not substitute for an applied emollient.

Psoriasis behaves somewhat differently in heat. Many people with psoriasis find that moderate sun exposure eases their plaques, and warm weather can bring genuine relief for some. But sweating around existing plaques can still cause irritation, and the physical scratch reflex triggered by sweat on sensitive skin creates its own cycle.

The Problem with Summer Sweat in Specific Body Locations

Not all sweat is equal from a skin perspective. The areas where sweat accumulates rather than evaporates are the locations most likely to become problem sites during a warm spell. These include: the backs of knees and inner elbows, where eczema is already commonly concentrated; the neck and hairline; under the arms; and anywhere clothing creates a seal against skin.

Consider someone who manages their eczema well through winter and spring, but notices each year that July and August bring flares on the inner thighs and under their arms. They have tried different laundry detergents and changed their diet, but the pattern keeps returning. When they start logging photos alongside notes about temperature and physical activity, a clearer picture emerges: the flares cluster on days of outdoor activity in temperatures above 22 degrees Celsius, not on days spent indoors. The trigger is not the laundry detergent or their diet. It is localised sweating from exertion. That distinction changes what they do about it.

This kind of pattern is only visible in retrospect, and only if you have been recording consistently enough to have something to look back at.

Adjusting Your Emollient Routine for Warmer Months

Many people find that the thick ointments that work well in winter feel intolerable in summer. The occlusive sensation, the heaviness on skin, the way they interact with sweat, all make compliance harder when temperatures rise. This is a genuine issue, not a lack of effort.

The general guidance from dermatology is to continue using an emollient but to consider moving to a lighter formulation in warmer months if it improves adherence. A lighter cream applied consistently is more effective than a thick ointment applied sporadically. Your clinician may suggest specific alternatives if your current formulation is proving difficult to use in summer conditions.

Timing also matters. Applying an emollient immediately after a shower, before the skin has fully dried, is a well-established principle, but the same principle applies after swimming or after any activity that involves water or heavy sweating. The window after cleansing is when the skin surface is most receptive to emollient occlusion.

Sun Exposure: The Nuanced Picture

It is worth being careful about the simple version of the "sun is good for eczema and psoriasis" message. For a proportion of people with psoriasis, moderate UV exposure genuinely helps by slowing the rate of skin cell turnover, and some people with eczema also report improvement in summer. But this is not universal, and the picture reverses when sun exposure becomes excessive.

Sunburn is an inflammatory event. For anyone with eczema or psoriasis, a sunburn on top of already-sensitive skin is a reliable route to a significant flare. Sunscreens introduce their own complication: some formulations, particularly those with fragrance or certain chemical UV filters, are poorly tolerated on eczema-prone skin. Mineral-based sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are generally considered better tolerated, though individual responses vary and your clinician is the right person to advise on specific products.

We are not saying sun is uniformly bad. We are saying that tracking whether your skin improves or worsens on days with sun exposure is more useful than accepting a blanket rule.

Clothing Choices in Summer

Fabric choice becomes more pressing in summer because sweating increases the contact time between fabric and skin. Loose, breathable natural fibres are often better tolerated by eczema-prone skin than synthetics, which trap heat and moisture against the skin surface. This is not a rigid rule. Some people find that tightly woven fabrics actually reduce skin irritation by preventing contact with environmental irritants like grass. Individual variation is significant here.

What is consistent is that tight clothing in areas that are already prone to flaring will almost always make things worse when combined with heat and activity. A waistband sitting over an active psoriasis plaque during a walk in July is a straightforward recipe for discomfort. Giving problem areas room to breathe, literally, is a practical adjustment rather than a dermatological prescription.

What to Track During Summer Months

If you are using a photo diary and symptom log through summer, there are a few variables worth capturing consistently. Daily maximum temperature is useful as a reference point. Whether you exercised or spent time outdoors, what you wore, whether you sweat heavily in any body area, and how promptly you showered and reapplied emollient after sweating, all contribute to understanding the pattern when you look back.

The photo record is particularly valuable in summer because flares in skin folds can look very different from the plaques or patches you might see in winter. Without a photo sequence, it can be difficult to explain to a dermatologist or GP what your skin was doing across the preceding months. A log with photos makes that conversation specific rather than impressionistic.

It is important to be clear about what tracking does not do. A photo diary cannot tell you whether your summer flares are being driven by heat, sweat, changed emollient use, sun exposure, or some combination. It records what happened; the pattern is a hypothesis, not a diagnosis. Confirming a trigger or ruling one out is a clinical question, and the data you collect is input to that conversation, not a substitute for it.

Building Consistency When Routines Change

Summer disrupts routines in ways that winter does not. Holidays, outdoor events, changes in daily schedule, all create gaps in habits that were otherwise established. Many people find that their tracking consistency dips in July and August, precisely when the triggers are at their most active.

The practical approach is to treat the tracking habit the way you treat the emollient: light-touch but consistent. A photo and a one-line note takes less than a minute. If summer disruption is a regular problem for you, building that minute into a fixed anchor point in your day, after the morning shower, before bed, works better than trying to find time whenever you remember.

The data from a summer when you tracked consistently is one of the most useful inputs you can bring to a clinic appointment in autumn. It gives a clinician something concrete to look at, rather than a subjective account of a difficult few months.
